You know you want to start your spring cleaning but don’t know where to start or how to get rid of those pesky stains throughout your Mount Dora home. We have 25 tips you might not have been told by your grandmother, using every day materials and a whole lot of white vinegar!

  1. Got a smelly mattress? Pour vodka into a spray bottle and spritz your mattress to disinfect it. Let the vodka air dry which will kill odor-causing bacteria.
  2. The food build up in your microwave is gross! Put lemon slices in a cup of water and microwave until water boils. Leave the water in to steam a few minutes. When you take it out you’ll be able to remove the food build up inside.
  3. Don’t get covered in dust trying to clean your ceiling fan – Catch the dust by using an old pillow case. Put a blade inside the case and slowly pull towards you. The dust will go inside the pillow case rather than on you!
  4. Those little kid fingerprints on your walls can be a real pain! Remove greasy fingerprints by covering the stain with white chalk, waiting a few minutes, and wiping the wall with a damp cloth.
  5. If you have pets, you know that you can never get all the hair out of your home! Use a rubber squeegee on your fabric couches and rugs to collect your pets’ hair that your vacuum didn’t catch.
  6. If you use your blender often, it needs a good cleaning. Fill your blender with warm water and a drop of dish soap and turn it on for a few seconds. Dump the water, rinse and dry for a clean blender.
  7. Getting in your vents is a struggle! Wrap a moistened towel around a butter knife and clean your vents narrow grate.
  8. Burn Marks on your pan? Don’t get rid of it, clean it! Fill the bottom of your pan with water and one cup of white vinegar. Simmer the pot on the stove. Remove and add two tablespoons of baking soda. After a few minutes, empty the pan and scrub lightly to remove burn marks.
  9. Don’t hurt your hands trying to clean your coffee or spice grinder. Put bread or uncooked white rice in your grinder to remove old odors. Remove and grind up one tablespoon of baking soda to clean. Remove baking soda and wipe thoroughly.
  10. If you don’t have a self-cleaning oven, no worries! Fill a bowl with half a cup of ammonia. Place bowl in your completely cool oven. Leave the bowl in overnight and wipe the oven clean the next day.
  11. Your shower head can get nasty water build up that you don’t want to look at while showering. Pour distilled white vinegar in a plastic bag and cover your shower head with the filled bag. Secure with a rubber band. Let it soak for an hour or overnight. Remove bag and wipe the scum away with a rag.
  12. Are your drinking glasses not sparkling enough? Spray white vinegar on your clouded or spotty drinking glasses and wipe with a paper towel for a sparkly clean.
  13. After cooking in glass dishware, you can get some nasty food build up. Clean off your baked food from your glass dishware by making a small ball of aluminum foil and scrubbing the grime away with a little dish soap.
  14. Bet you didn’t know that dryer sheets can double as a duster. Dust just about anything with dryer sheets to clean and help repel dust in the future.
  15. Clean your microfiber couch by spraying rubbing alcohol. Use a clean white sponge to rub the couch and fluff the fibers with a hard bristle brush for a good as new look!
  16. Dishwashers need cleaning too! Run your dishwasher on the hottest cycle with just a container filled with white vinegar on the top rack. After the cycle sprinkle some baking soda on the bottom and run again on a short-hot cycle.
  17. Have a glass shower? Get rid of the soap buildup on your glass by straying cooking spray and letting it sit for about five minutes. Wash it off with soapy water and let it dry.
  18. Is your sink draining slowly? Throw four Alka-Seltzer tablets down the drain and then add one cup of distilled vinegar. Wait ten minutes and rinse with boiling water.
  19. Get rid of that annoying ring around your bathtub by using a cut in half grapefruit sprinkled with salt. Wet your tub and add some more salt to the bottom. Use your cut grapefruit as a scrubber. Make sure you get the juice over the entire surface and rinse clean!
  20. Cleaning your blinds is a pain! Use a clean sock dipped in water and white vinegar to easily wipe down your window blinds with your hand in the sock.
  21. Have a few water rings on your furniture? Get rid of the water ring on your wood furniture by wiping it up with a cloth and using a hair dryer on full blast.
  22. Remove carpet stains with two parts water and one part vinegar. Spray the mixture on the stain and cover with a damp rag. Press a hot iron on steam setting on the rag for 30 minutes. Repeat until the stain is gone.
  23. A no scrub way to clean your coffee pot is to fill the reservoir with white vinegar and water. Run the brew cycle half way, wait an hour, then turn it back on and let the cycle repeat itself. When this cycle is finished, run two cycles of fresh water only and it’ll be clean without scrubbing.
  24. Don’t throw out your sponge, clean it! Sanitize your sponge by placing it wet in the microwave for two minutes on high.
  25. Water stains on your faucets look gross! Wipe down your steel faucets with a cut in half lemon then take a damp cloth and remove the juice for water stain removal.

Great tips Loretta!
Some of these tips are for appliances and use products that my Grandmother didn't even have until she was in her 90's. Guess there's no way she could have taught me!
